03 DECISIONFISHING DECISION & SAFETYFishing outlook, marine hazards and trip-planning guidance

CONDITIONS SUMMARY

FISHING OUTLOOK

Category-specific planning guidance built from the official data already shown on this page. It is not a safety clearance; official NWS/NOAA alerts always take priority.

How this works: official alerts override the outlook. Otherwise each card interprets available wind, gusts, waves, wave period, rain/thunderstorm wording and tide using conservative planning thresholds. These are BigJoe planning rules, not official vessel operating limits; your boat, kayak, skill level and exact shoreline may require stricter limits.

Important: ā€œNo matching alertā€ only means the selected NWS point-alert feed has no matching active alert. Rip-current risk and surf height use the NWS Surf Zone Forecast when available; sea observations use NOAA NDBC. Never treat a missing alert as proof that conditions are safe.

06 RANGEINLAND & OFFSHORELand observations and far-offshore buoy conditions

NOAA NDBC OPEN-OCEAN OBSERVATION

FAR-OFFSHORE BUOY

Where mapped, an NDBC open-ocean buoy adds regional offshore context: 41043 in the Atlantic about 170 nautical miles north-northeast of San Juan for north and east coast areas, or 42060 in the Caribbean about 200 nautical miles southeast of Puerto Rico for south and west coast areas. These readings are regional offshore conditions and must not be treated as shoreline conditions.

SPECIES CONNECTION

SPECIES CONDITIONS

Use the selected location conditions with the species library. Species-specific weather claims remain evidence-gated; unsupported claims are not invented.

Choose a species guide

Weather, tides and marine safety use official NOAA/NWS sources where mapped; sun and moon data prefer U.S. Naval Observatory astronomy with a local calculated fallback. Station coverage varies by fishing area. Always follow active marine alerts and local regulations before every trip.
