Bay of Quinte & Thousand Islands, Ontario Fishing Guide
The Bay of Quinte is best known for big walleye that come in from Lake Ontario in fall and winter. Downstream, the St. Lawrence River and Thousand Islands are famous for giant muskie, mostly caught trolling in fall, plus smallmouth bass and pike. Ontario rules for Fisheries Management Zone 20 apply on the Canadian side, and the river is the border with New York, so know which side you are on.
📍 Eastern Lake Ontario, Ontario, Canada. The Bay of Quinte runs from Trenton past Belleville, Deseronto and Picton to Bath. East of Kingston the water becomes the St. Lawrence River and the Thousand Islands, with Gananoque on the Ontario shore and Clayton, New York across the border.

Quick facts
- The Bay of Quinte shoreline runs in a Z-shape from Trenton to Bath for almost 100 km; the Trent, Moira and Napanee rivers drain into it.
- The Bay of Quinte was named a Great Lakes Area of Concern in 1985 and is still under a Remedial Action Plan.
- Many of the bay's big walleye spend summer in Lake Ontario and move into the bay from early fall through the ice season, ahead of the spring spawn.
- The IGFA all-tackle catch-and-release record muskie, 135 cm (53.149 in), was caught in the Thousand Islands in November 2022.
- New York's state record muskie, 69 lb 15 oz, was caught near Clayton in 1957 and still stands.

Tips
- For bay walleye: troll crankbaits in fall, jig through the ice in winter, and drift a lightly weighted worm harness in spring.
- For muskie, troll big baits along shoal edges; a top captain averages 12 to 15 hours of fishing per muskie hit.
- Ontario guides suggest working baitfish near shoals in 15 to 30 feet of water for muskie.
- The St. Lawrence is the border: you need an Ontario licence in Canadian water and a New York licence in U.S. water.
- Carry your Outdoors Card and Licence Summary while fishing in Ontario.
