Santa Barbara & the Channel Islands, California Fishing Guide
The Santa Barbara Channel and the Channel Islands give anglers kelp beds, rocky reefs and open water within a short run of the harbor. Local boats fish for calico bass, rockfish, lingcod, halibut and white seabass, and multi-day boats run to the outer islands and offshore for tuna. Many island shorelines are no-take marine reserves, so plan your spots with a current MPA map.
📍 Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, Southern California. Boats leave from Sea Landing in Santa Barbara Harbor, Ventura Harbor and Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. The near islands are Anacapa and Santa Cruz; the outer islands are Santa Rosa, San Miguel, Santa Barbara and San Nicolas.

Tips
- Check the CDFW MPA map before every island trip; reserves cover large parts of all five park islands.
- In a marine reserve you may cross with fish on board, but no gear in the water while anchored or drifting.
- Your license needs the Ocean Enhancement Validation (south of Point Arguello) unless it is a one- or two-day license.
- Carry a descending device for rockfish; it is required on boats.
- San Miguel Island has extra boating and landing limits; read the San Miguel Island Special Closure rules first.
