Pyramid Lake Fishing Guide
Pyramid Lake is a large desert lake owned and managed by the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, famous for big Lahontan cutthroat trout. You need a tribal fishing permit, not a Nevada license, and the tribe's rules on barbless hooks, no bait, slot limits and closed areas are strictly enforced. Many shore anglers stand on ladders or stepladders in the water to reach the drop-off.
📍 Northwest Nevada, northeast of Reno and Sparks, entirely inside the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation. From Sparks take State Route 445 north about 33 miles to Sutcliffe (Ranger Station and marina), or I-80 east to Wadsworth and State Route 447 north 16 miles to Nixon.

Tips
- Buy your tribal permit before you fish (online through pyramidlake.us, or at the Ranger Station in Sutcliffe, (775) 476-1155). A Nevada license is not needed or valid.
- Pinch your barbs flat; rangers check lures and flies and write tickets for barbed hooks.
- Your ladder, milk crate or stand must carry a permanent tag with the owner's name, address and phone, and must come out of the water by the end of legal fishing hours.
- Keep fish in the water when you can and keep photos short; most trout here are released.
- Wind can come up fast; wading to the drop-off in cold water and waves is risky.
