Atchafalaya Basin, Louisiana Fishing Guide
The Atchafalaya is a huge river swamp of bayous, canals, cypress lakes and backwaters with largemouth bass, sac-a-lait, bream and catfish. Fishing depends on the river: rising, muddy water is tough, and a slowly falling river usually fishes best. New, stricter bass and crappie limits started in the lower basin on August 1, 2026.
📍 South-central Louisiana, USA. The basin runs about 140 miles from near Simmesport (Old River Control Structure) south to the Gulf, between the protection levees west of Baton Rouge. Access points include Henderson Lake, Butte La Rose, Krotz Springs and, at the lower end, Morgan City/Berwick and the Atchafalaya Delta WMA. Lake Verret, Grassy Lake and Lake Palourde lie just east.

Quick facts
- The Atchafalaya Basin covers more than 1.4 million acres, including about 885,000 acres of forested wetlands, and is the largest contiguous river swamp in the U.S.
- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers lets 30% of Mississippi River flow into the basin, which drives its water levels.
- Since Aug 1, 2026, the Lower Atchafalaya Basin, Grassy Lake, Lake Palourde and Lake Verret have a 12-inch minimum and 5-fish limit for black bass, and an 8-inch minimum and 25-fish limit for crappie.
- Black crappie are the main sac-a-lait in the basin, according to LDWF surveys.
- Low oxygen after Hurricane Andrew in 1992 killed an estimated 182 million fish in the basin.
What you can catch
- Largemouth bass
Main sport fish; most basin bass are 4 years old or younger. Lower basin: 5/day, 12-in minimum. - Sac-a-lait (crappie)
Mostly black crappie; lower basin 25/day, 8-in minimum since Aug 1, 2026. - Bluegill (bream)
No statewide limit; still bites at lower river stages. - Redear sunfish (chinquapin)
Counted as bream; no statewide limit. - Blue catfish
12-in minimum; part of the 100-fish catfish aggregate. - Channel catfish
11-in minimum. - Flathead catfish
14-in minimum.
Month by month
| January | In LDWF's ideal water cycle the swamp floods from about December through March. High muddy water slows fishing. |
|---|---|
| February | Flooded swamp; look for water between green and root-beer color. |
| March | Interior swamps flooded through March under the ideal cycle. |
| April | Water should start falling slowly; watch the Krotz Springs gauge. |
| May | If floodwater stays into May-July and drains fast, low oxygen can kill fish. |
| June | Low-water period starts (June-October in LDWF's ideal cycle). |
| July | Hot, still days can stop the midday bite; fish cloudy, breezy days. |
| August | New lower-basin bass and crappie limits took effect Aug 1, 2026. |
| September | Low water. WMA Limited Access Areas, including Atchafalaya Delta, closed to gas motors Sept - Jan. |
| October | Fall low water; around 10 ft at Krotz Springs, sac-a-lait go deeper while bream and bass still bite. |
| November | Fall fishing; check WMA hunting-season rules. |
| December | Water usually starts rising again under the ideal cycle. |
Tips
- Watch the Krotz Springs river gauge; one veteran angler likes about 14 ft and falling.
- Skip very muddy water and black-clear water (low oxygen); look for green to milky root-beer color.
- The new bass and crappie limits apply at any boat launch in the regulated area, even for fish caught elsewhere.
- Get a WMA Access Permit and check in and out (Self-Clearing Permit) on LDWF lands like the Atchafalaya Delta WMA.
- Check current fish-consumption advisories; USGS reported a mercury advisory for Henderson Swamp starting in 1996.
