Destin, Florida Fishing Guide
Destin has deep water close to the beach, so anglers can reach snapper, grouper, amberjack and blue-water fish on short runs. East Pass and Choctawhatchee Bay add jetty, bridge and bay fishing for redfish, trout, flounder, mackerel and sheepshead, and the spring cobia run passes right along the beach. Reef fish seasons are set each year by Florida and NOAA, so check dates before every trip.
📍 Destin, Okaloosa County, on the Florida Panhandle. Boats leave from Destin Harbor and run out East Pass, the jettied inlet between Choctawhatchee Bay and the Gulf. Fort Walton Beach and the Okaloosa Island Pier are just west; Eglin Air Force Base controls much of the shoreline to the west and north.

Tips
- Register as a State Reef Fish Angler (free, renew yearly) at GoOutdoorsFlorida.com before fishing for red snapper from a private boat.
- Have a descending device or venting tool rigged and ready, plus a dehooking tool, and use non-stainless circle hooks with natural bait on reef fish.
- For spring cobia, watch from a tower; a southeast wind and easterly current keep cobia on the surface.
- Fish the moving tide at East Pass; the east jetty is easier to reach, but its big rocks are slick.
- Okaloosa County posts its reef locations as GPX and Excel lists at destinfwb.com.
