FISHING GUIDE · KENAI PENINSULA, ALASKA
Kenai Peninsula, Alaska Fishing Guide
The Kenai Peninsula is famous for Kenai River sockeye, silvers and big rainbow trout, Homer halibut charters, and Seward's silver salmon and saltwater fishing. King salmon are in a long slump here, and in 2026 Kenai River kings and most Upper Cook Inlet saltwater kings were closed for the summer. Rules change by emergency order during the season, so always check ADF&G before you go.
📍 Southcentral Alaska, south of Anchorage. The Kenai River runs from Kenai Lake through Skilak Lake to Cook Inlet at Kenai and Soldotna; the Russian River joins it upstream of Skilak Lake. Homer sits on Kachemak Bay at the south end of the peninsula, and Seward is on Resurrection Bay on the east side.

Tips
- Buy your license and a king salmon stamp online before you travel; you need the stamp even for catch-and-release king fishing.
- Check ADF&G emergency orders (adfg.alaska.gov/sf/EONR) the night before; Kenai limits changed several times in 2026.
- On the lower Kenai you cannot fish from a motorized boat on Mondays May 1 - Jul 31 (except Memorial Day) below Skilak Lake.
- Use a landing net; gaffs are not allowed for salmon on the lower Kenai.
- Carry a deepwater release device for rockfish on any saltwater trip from Homer or Seward.
