Lake El Salto Fishing Guide

El Salto is one of the most famous trophy largemouth bass lakes in the world, with flooded timber and few other anglers. Most visitors fish from lodges with local guides. Water levels change a lot through the year, which changes where and how the bass bite.

📍 Sinaloa, Mexico, in the Sierra Madre foothills about 50 miles north of Mazatlán (under 2 hours by highway from Mazatlán airport, MZT). Officially Presa Aurelio Benassini Vizcaíno, on the Elota River.

Tips

Rules and license

CONAPESCA (Comisión Nacional de Acuacultura y Pesca), Mexico · Official rules page ↗

  • Mexico's sport fishing standard NOM-017-PESC-1994 covers federal waters. Fishing from shore needs no permit, but fishing from a boat needs a sport fishing permit, and you must carry it while fishing.
  • Freshwater species: limit of 5 fish per angler per day. Fish over the limit must be released alive.
  • Only one rod, or one hand line, per angler.
  • Sport-caught fish may not be sold.

Rules change. Always check the official page before you fish.
