Data rule: Lake stars are the OpenStreetMap or GeoNames center of the named lake, or the dam when the lake itself is not mapped; these are general positions, not pinpoints, and each star says which. Boat ramps and docks come from OpenStreetMap; few are mapped in Mexico. Every star shows its source when you tap it. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

Big bass in flooded timber

Mexico's reservoirs were stocked with Florida-strain largemouth bass, and the warm water and flooded trees grow them big. El Salto is the most famous, with 10-pound bass every season; Comedero, Picachos and Huites are close behind, and most are fished from lodges with guides.

In the northeast, Vicente Guerrero was a legend in the 1970s and 1980s and still produces, and El Cuchillo near Monterrey has given up some of the biggest bass in the country.

Rules: Mexico requires a CONAPESCA sport-fishing license, and the lodges practice catch-and-release for big bass. Check the local situation and travel advice before you go.
