Leech Lake, Minnesota Fishing Guide
Leech Lake is one of Minnesota's big walleye lakes, with many bays, rocky reefs and a long gravel shoreline where walleye spawn. Walleye and muskie are most common in the main lake, northern pike are thickest in the weedy bays, and yellow perch are the main food fish for all of them. The walleye population recovered after hard times in the early 2000s, and the lake is fished hard both in open water and through the ice.

Quick facts
- Leech Lake covers about 112,000 surface acres; a dam built on the Leech River in 1884 raised the water about two feet.
- Maximum depth is near 150 feet, but nearly 80 percent of the lake is less than 35 feet deep, and the shoreline is about 201 miles long.
- Leech Lake has its own walleye rule: possession limit of 4, only 1 over 20 inches (statewide limit is 6).
- The DNR says most of Leech Lake lies within the Leech Lake Indian Reservation, where sport-netting limits for whitefish and cisco (tullibee) are lower than statewide.
- Leech Lake is a muskie brood-stock lake: the DNR takes muskie eggs in Miller's Bay every four years and returns about 600 fingerlings.

Tips
- Remember Leech Lake's walleye limit is 4 (only 1 over 20 inches), not the statewide 6.
- Pike hold in the weedy, fertile bays; walleye and muskie are most common in the main lake (Sucker, Portage and Traders bays area).
- Never dump bait or lake water into the lake; it is illegal to release bait in Minnesota. Drain water and refill bait buckets with tap or bottled water.
- The DNR encourages catch-photo-release for muskie tournaments.
- Check ice yourself: the DNR says stay on shore until there are 4 inches of new, clear ice.
