HARD BAITS & PLUGS
Needlefish Plug
A long, pencil-thin surf plug that casts far and swims with a subtle wiggle, matching the needlefish (agujón) that barracuda and jacks eat all over PR.

How to fish it
- 1
Cast as far as you can; the slim, heavy body cuts through wind better than most plugs.
- 2
Reel slowly and steadily with the rod tip up; it rides just under the surface.
- 3
Speed up to skim it on top like a fleeing agujón when barracuda are chasing.
- 4
Work it parallel to the beach or along the edge of a flat to keep it in the strike zone.
BigJoe Tips
- This plug comes from the US Northeast surf, but it fits PR well because agujón are common bait here.
- Barracuda love a fast, straight retrieve; jacks and snook usually want it slower.
- Some needlefish sink; count them down to fish a little deeper in rough water.
Mistakes to avoid
- Expecting a big wobble; the action is subtle, and that is the point.
- Using a short rod that cannot load and launch the plug.
