Step-by-step build instructions

  1. 1

Start with 10–30 lb main line on a spinning or conventional reel.

  2. 2

Join a 2–4 ft fluorocarbon leader with a double uni knot.

  3. 3

Tie on a circle hook with an improved clinch or a loop knot.

  4. 4

Hook the bait lightly through the nose or upper lip.

  5. 5

Cast up-current and let it swim. Keep the drag light or the bail open.

  6. 6

When the line runs, reel tight. Don’t jerk: the circle hook sets itself.

BigJoe Tips

  • Use the lightest leader the water clarity allows.
  • Swap the bait as soon as it stops swimming hard.
  • With circle hooks, reel tight instead of setting hard.
  • Hook the bait where it can still swim and breathe.

Variations

  • Add a small float to keep the bait up.
  • Add a split shot if the bait stays on the surface.
  • Use a short wire bite tippet for mackerel and barracuda.
  • Go heavier on the leader around docks and mangroves.
