Knocker Rig

The egg sinker slides down the leader and rests right against the hook eye. The bait stays pinned to the bottom, and if you snag, slack line lets the sinker “knock” the hook free.

Step-by-step build instructions

  1. 1

Tie the main line to a barrel swivel.

  2. 2

Tie a 3–6 ft leader to the other eye.

  3. 3

Slide the egg sinker onto the leader.

  4. 4

Optional: add a soft bead to cushion the knot.

  5. 5

Tie the hook to the end of the leader.

  6. 6

The sinker slides down and rests on the hook eye. Bait it and drop straight down.

BigJoe Tips

  • Use just enough weight to stay on the bottom in the current.
  • Snagged? Give slack: the sinker drops and knocks the hook loose.
  • The bait sits right at the sinker, so it rarely tangles.
  • Drop straight down and stay vertical over the structure.

Variations

  • Torpedo sinker instead of an egg on rocky bottom.
  • Snell the hook for a straighter pull.
  • 60–80 lb leader for big grouper around wrecks.
  • Smaller hook and lighter sinker for yellowtail and lane snapper.
