Cumberland River Tailwater (Wolf Creek Dam, Kentucky) Fishing Guide
The Cumberland below Wolf Creek Dam is Kentucky's top trout river, with rainbow, brown, brook and cutthroat trout. Rainbows have a 15-20 inch protected slot, and browns must be 20 inches to keep. Water rises fast when the dam generates, so check the schedule and wade only when it is low.
📍 South-central Kentucky. The trout tailwater runs from Wolf Creek Dam (Lake Cumberland, near Jamestown) about 75 miles down the Cumberland River to the Tennessee line, through Russell, Cumberland and Monroe counties. Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery sits below the dam off U.S. 127.

Tips
- Check the Wolf Creek column on the Corps/TVA generation schedule before you go; schedules can change with power demand and weather.
- Pick a rock or stick on the bank as a gauge and head to shore as soon as the water starts rising.
- Drift small nymphs (size 16-18) under an indicator, or a Trout Magnet under a float on spinning gear.
- Do not chum or use corn to attract trout; it is illegal on the tailwater and Hatchery Creek.
- Wade unless you know the river well by boat; help can be far away if your motor fails.
