Gatun Lake Fishing Guide

Gatun Lake is Panama's top freshwater fishing spot and is best known for peacock bass, usually 3 to 5 pounds and caught in big numbers. Snook and the odd tarpon also live in the deeper channels and along the Canal. You share the water with huge ocean ships passing through the Canal, so most anglers fish with a local guide.

📍 Panama, in the middle of the Panama Canal, about an hour from Panama City. Most trips leave from Gamboa; the Chagres River flows into the lake.

Tips

Rules and license

ARAP (Autoridad de los Recursos Acuaticos de Panama) · Official rules page ↗

  • Panama's fishing law (Law 204 of 2021, Article 66) says sport fishing in inland or marine waters requires a license from ARAP.
  • New sport fishing rules (Executive Decree No. 9 of June 10, 2026) take effect December 10, 2026.
  • The 2025 ARAP draft of those rules proposed a personal sport fishing card for everyone over 12, including people fishing from lakes and riverbanks; for foreigners, 7 days for B/.10, 30 days for B/.30 or 180 days for B/.75. Confirm the final terms with ARAP or your guide.
  • The same draft proposed keeping no more than 3 peacock bass per boat per day.
  • Fishing boats and tour operators that run sport fishing trips need their own ARAP license.

Rules change. Always check the official page before you fish.
