Parks & rules

Data rule: Lake stars are the OpenStreetMap center of the named lake, and the river stars are OpenStreetMap town positions; these are general positions, not pinpoints, and each star says so. Docks and ramps come from OpenStreetMap; few are mapped here. Parks and refuges come from the World Database on Protected Areas, shown in dashed red; Barro Colorado Island in Gatun Lake is a protected research reserve, shown in red. Every star shows its source when you tap it. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

Peacock bass, guapote and river tarpon

Peacock bass (sargento) were stocked in Panama in the 1950s and took over Gatun Lake, where they are caught by the hundreds among the islands next to the passing ships. Alajuela and Bayano lakes have them too.

In Costa Rica and Nicaragua, guapote (rainbow bass) live in Lake Arenal and Lake Nicaragua, and big tarpon and snook swim far inland up the Río San Juan and into Caño Negro. In Guatemala, the Río Dulce brings tarpon and snook from the Caribbean into Lake Izabal.

Rules: each country has its own license and rules, and many of these waters are inside parks and refuges with seasons. Go with a local guide.
