Lake Arenal and Caño Negro (Costa Rica) Fishing Guide
Lake Arenal is a big, deep reservoir where guides fish for guapote (rainbow bass) and machaca around islands, drowned trees and old fence lines. Caño Negro is a protected wetland on the Río Frío with tarpon, snook, guapote and the prehistoric-looking gaspar (tropical gar). Costa Rica requires every angler to carry a current fishing license from INCOPESCA, and the refuge has its own rules, so check with the rangers before you fish.
📍 Northern Costa Rica, Alajuela province. Lake Arenal lies between Alajuela and Guanacaste; most guided trips leave from the municipal ramp in Nuevo Arenal, about an hour from La Fortuna. Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge is in Los Chiles and Guatuso cantons near the Nicaraguan border, on the lower Río Frío; about 146 km (2.5 hours) from Liberia airport.
