Lake Michigan Salmon and Trout Fishing Guide
Lake Michigan has a big stocked fishery for chinook and coho salmon, lake trout, steelhead and brown trout. Boats troll near shore in spring, then run out to 70-200 feet of water in summer, and fish come back to the piers and rivers in fall. Each state has its own license and limits, and you need the license of the state whose water you are in.
📍 Lake Michigan, fished from Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Michigan ports. Michigan ports include Ludington, Manistee, South Haven and St. Joseph; Wisconsin ports include Milwaukee (McKinley and South Shore ramps) and Kewaunee; Indiana's main access is Michigan City (Trail Creek) and the Port of Indiana.

Quick facts
- Indiana has the smallest share of Lake Michigan: 43 miles of shoreline and 224 square miles of water.
- In spring (March to mid-May) along the southern shore, coho salmon make up close to 90 percent of the trout and salmon catch.
- Chinook and coho return to streams to spawn from late August to early November and die after spawning.
- Wisconsin's records from Lake Michigan: chinook 44 lb 15 oz (Door County, 1994) and coho 26 lb 1.9 oz (Milwaukee County, 1999).
- Wisconsin DNR collects salmon and trout eggs at the Besadny facility on the Kewaunee River each spring and fall.
What you can catch
- Chinook (king) salmon
Summer offshore trolling; runs into rivers late August to November. - Coho salmon
Spring nearshore fishing on the southern shore; fall runs. - Lake trout

Tips
- Carry a license for each state's water you fish; Indiana boats fishing deep summer water often cross into Illinois or Michigan.
- Wisconsin requires a paper copy of your license and stamps while fishing Lake Michigan.
- In Indiana tributaries, trout and salmon must be hooked in the mouth; foul-hooked fish must go back.
- Most Indiana tributaries run through private land; get landowner permission.
- Michigan's Weekly Fishing Report lists current bites by port.
