How to fish it
- 1
Rig the spoon on 15-30 ft of leader behind a planer or a trolling sinker.
- 2
Troll at roughly 5-7 knots and check that the spoon wobbles without spinning.
- 3
Run it along the reef edge or the drop-off, zig-zagging over bait.
- 4
When a fish hits, keep the boat moving a moment to set the hook, then fight it with the planer tripped.
BigJoe Tips
- A good ball-bearing swivel is a must; a spinning spoon twists the line fast.
- Use wire every time; kingfish and wahoo cut mono like nothing.
- Run a small spoon on a planer and a bigger lure on top to cover two depths.
Mistakes to avoid
- Trolling too fast so the spoon spins instead of wobbling.
- Skipping the wire leader and losing fish and spoons to teeth.
