SPOONS & WIRE BAITS
Bunker Spoon
A huge, wide trolling spoon made to look like a menhaden for Northeast striped bass; rarely needed in Puerto Rico, though big trolling spoons do take kingfish and wahoo.

WhereMainly US Northeast; here, reef edges and drop-offs

How to fish it
- 1
Rig it on wire line or behind a heavy trolling weight to get it down.
- 2
Troll slowly, about 2.5-3.5 knots, until the rod tip pulses steadily with the spoon's wobble.
- 3
Run it along reef edges and drop-offs where kingfish and wahoo hunt.
- 4
If the pulse stops, the spoon is fouled or the speed is wrong; check it right away.
BigJoe Tips
- Striped bass do not live in Puerto Rico; this spoon is mainly a Northeast US lure.
- If you already own one, try it slow on a reef edge for kingfish, but don't buy one just for PR.
- Tuning the spoon's bend changes its wobble; make small adjustments only.
Mistakes to avoid
- Trolling too fast so the spoon spins and twists the line.
- Buying expensive Northeast gear when a regular trolling spoon does the job here.
