How to fish it

How to fish it
  1. 1

Cast up-current and let the jig sink until the line goes slack on the bottom.

  2. 2

Snap the rod tip up sharply 1-2 feet so the jig jumps off the bottom.

  3. 3

Let it fall back on a semi-tight line; most bites come on the drop.

  4. 4

Reel up the slack and repeat, keeping the jig near the bottom all the way back.

BigJoe Tips

  • Add a soft plastic trailer or a strip of shrimp to give the jig extra scent and bulk.
  • Use the lightest jig that still touches bottom in the current.
  • A bucktail tied with a loop knot swings and darts more freely.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using a jig so heavy it drags and snags instead of hopping.
  • Keeping a slack line on the fall and missing the bite.
