How to fish it

How to fish it
  1. 1

Drop the jig straight down to the bottom or to the depth where you mark fish.

  2. 2

Engage the reel and start a fast one-crank, one-rod-pump rhythm.

  3. 3

Work it up 50-100 feet off the bottom, then drop it back down.

  4. 4

If you get a hit and miss, keep cranking fast; jacks and tunas usually come back.

BigJoe Tips

  • Use assist hooks on the top of the jig only; they snag less and hook better.
  • Use your body and a rod butt in your armpit or a gimbal belt to save your arms.
  • Count the drop with colored braid so you return to the same depth every time.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Jigging too slowly; a speed jig needs speed to look alive.
  • Using light braid that breaks when an amberjack heads for the wreck.
