How to fish it

How to fish it
  1. 1

Texas-rig it on a strong flipping or straight-shank hook with a pegged weight heavy enough to punch through the cover.

  2. 2

Flip or pitch it into the holes and shady pockets of weeds, brush or a laydown with a quiet entry.

  3. 3

Let it fall to the bottom, shake it in place, hop it once or twice, then pull out and pitch to the next spot.

  4. 4

When the line jumps or feels heavy, set hard right away and pull the fish out of the cover before it wraps you.

BigJoe Tips

  • Peg the weight every time; a sliding weight in cover means snags and missed fish.
  • Fish the shady side of every target first, then the side facing the wind.
  • Keep the boat or your feet back and quiet; flipping is a close-range game.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Using line that is too light for the cover, so fish break off in the weeds.
  • Leaving it in one spot too long; most bites come on the first drop.
