How to fish it
- 1
Run it on a short or middle position in the spread, often off a flat line or the center.
- 2
Troll around 6-8 knots and adjust until the squid swim and splash without tumbling.
- 3
Work it near birds, floating debris, FADs and temperature or color breaks.
- 4
When a tuna hits, keep the boat moving a moment to see if more fish come up, then clear the other lines.
BigJoe Tips
- Keep the chain short enough to handle; a long chain tangles when you turn the boat.
- Check that the squid are not spinning; a twisting chain twists the line and looks wrong.
- Some crews rig the last squid with a hook and the rest as teasers; know which one you are running.
Mistakes to avoid
- Trolling too fast so the chain skips and tumbles out of the water.
- Making sharp turns that wrap the chain around other lines.
