How to fish it
- 1
Drop the jig to the bottom and take up the slack right away.
- 2
Lift the rod with a short pitch while turning the handle a quarter to half turn.
- 3
Let the rod load and unload so the jig flips and flutters back down on its own.
- 4
Work the bottom 30 feet up, then drop back down; most hits come on the flutter.
BigJoe Tips
- Thin braid lets you hold bottom with a lighter jig; that is the whole point.
- Rig assist hooks on both ends; grouper often grab the tail.
- Once a grouper bites, crank hard for the first few turns to pull it off the rocks.
Mistakes to avoid
- Ripping it like a speed jig instead of letting the rod do the work.
- Using a stiff rod that cannot load and give the jig its flutter.
