SPOONS & WIRE BAITS
Weedless Spoon
A wobbling spoon with a wire weed guard over the hook, Johnson Silver Minnow style; it slides through grass and mangrove roots where other lures hang up.
DepthShallow, just under surface
ActionSlow wobble
WhereGrass flats, mangroves, shallow bays
LevelBeginner

How to fish it
- 1
Cast into grassy pockets or tight to mangrove roots.
- 2
Start reeling slowly right away so the spoon rides high over the grass.
- 3
Keep a steady wobble; lift the rod tip to keep it shallow over thick grass.
- 4
When a fish hits, wait a split second for it to turn, then set the hook firmly.
BigJoe Tips
- Add a soft-plastic grub or paddletail trailer for extra action and bulk.
- Use a small swivel a foot up the leader to cut line twist.
- Bend the weed guard slightly out if you are missing bites; in instead if it hangs up.
Mistakes to avoid
- Reeling so fast that the spoon spins instead of wobbling.
- Setting the hook too early before the fish has the spoon.
