Fishing Reels

Spinning, baitcasting or conventional?

Spinning reels are the easiest and the best all-round choice from shore. Baitcasters give more control casting heavy lures. Conventional and lever-drag reels are for trolling and deep-drop fishing from a boat.

Size and drag for salt water

A 3000 to 4000 size spinning reel covers most inshore fishing. Step up to 6000 to 8000 for big jacks, tarpon and offshore jigging. Look at the drag number: 15 to 25 lb of smooth drag stops strong fish without breaking line.

Make it last

Buy a reel that's sealed or rated for salt water, rinse it with fresh water after every trip (gently, no high pressure), and back the drag off before you store it.
