BigJoe’s buying guide

Fishing Rods

Match the rod to where you fish

From a pier, rocks or the beach, a 7 to 8 ft medium spinning rod casts far and handles snook, jacks and snapper. On a boat, go shorter and stronger: 6 to 7 ft for bottom fishing and jigging. For surf, 9 to 12 ft gets the bait past the breakers.

Power and action, simply

Power is how much the rod can lift. Medium covers most inshore fish; heavy is for grouper, kingfish and tuna. Action is where it bends. Fast action tips help you feel bites and set hooks with lures; moderate action is kinder to live bait.

What BigJoe looks for

Corrosion-proof guides (stainless or ceramic inserts), a grip that doesn't get slippery, and a rod you can rinse and forget. Salt eats cheap guides in one season, so spend a little more on what touches the line.
