Parks & rules

Data rule: South Bank comes from the Marine Regions (VLIZ) gazetteer; it is the general center of a large feature, not a pinpoint, and its star says so. Harbors, points, bays, islands and ramps come from OpenStreetMap, and the protected areas come from the World Database on Protected Areas. Village marine areas listed as no-take and the Ofu Vaoto Marine Park are shown in solid red; the National Park of American Samoa and the other village marine areas are shown in dashed red, because fishing there follows their own rules. Any hot spot inside or right next to a no-fishing area was taken off the map. Every star shows its source when you tap it. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

Tuna country in the South Pacific

American Samoa is the southernmost U.S. territory, and Pago Pago is one of the great tuna ports of the Pacific. Local boats troll the steep island slopes for yellowfin, skipjack, wahoo, mahimahi and blue marlin, and the banks like South Bank hold dogtooth tuna, giant trevally and deep bottomfish.

From shore, people fish the reef edges, points and bays for trevally (malauli) and jacks, especially at dawn and dusk.

Many villages manage their own marine areas, and some are closed to fishing. Fagatele Bay, part of the National Marine Sanctuary of American Samoa, is also closed to fishing. Ask the village before you fish its reef, and look for the red areas on the map.
