Data rule: Galvez Bank and Santa Rosa Reef come from the Marine Regions (VLIZ) gazetteer; they are general centers of large features, not pinpoints, and each star says so. Harbors, piers, points, bays, ramps and marinas come from OpenStreetMap, and the protected areas come from the World Database on Protected Areas. Guam's marine preserves and ecological reserve areas and the CNMI marine sanctuaries and Sasanhaya Fish Reserve are shown in solid red; the Managaha Marine Conservation Area is shown in dashed red. Any hot spot inside or right next to a no-fishing area was taken off the map. Every star shows its source when you tap it. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

Blue marlin, wahoo and dogtooth tuna in the Marianas

Guam and the Northern Marianas sit at the edge of the Mariana Trench, so the water gets deep fast. Boats out of Agat, Hagatna, Saipan and Rota troll for blue marlin, wahoo, mahimahi, skipjack and yellowfin tuna, and the offshore banks like Galvez Bank and Santa Rosa Reef hold dogtooth tuna, giant trevally and bottomfish.

From shore, anglers cast for giant trevally and bluefin trevally from the rocky points, fish the lagoons and channels for goatfish and rabbitfish (manahak), and line the breakwaters when the atulai (bigeye scad) run.

Guam has five marine preserves (Tumon Bay, Piti Bomb Holes, Sasa Bay, Achang Reef Flat and Pati Point) where taking fish is closed or very limited, and the CNMI has its own sanctuaries and reserves. They are marked in red on the map.
