Data rule: Hannibal Bank comes from the Marine Regions (VLIZ) gazetteer and the towns, bays and islands from OpenStreetMap; these are general centers, not pinpoints, and each star says so. Marinas and launches come from OpenStreetMap, and the protected areas come from the World Database on Protected Areas. Costa Rica's marine national parks and biological reserves, closed to fishing, are shown in solid red; other parks and refuges, where fishing follows their own rules, are shown in dashed red. Every star shows its source when you tap it. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

Sailfish country from Guatemala to Panama

The Pacific coast of Central America is some of the best billfish water on Earth. Guatemala is famous for huge numbers of sailfish, and Costa Rica's Los Sueños and Quepos fleets fish sailfish and marlin from about December to April. Panama has Hannibal Bank, Coiba and Piñas Bay, where black marlin and record fish have made history.

Inshore, roosterfish, cubera snapper, jacks and snook line the rocky points, islands and river mouths from Nicaragua to the Pearl Islands.

Rules: every country here requires a fishing license (Costa Rica through INCOPESCA, Panama through ARAP), and Guatemala requires releasing sailfish and marlin. Costa Rica's marine national parks, including Isla del Coco, Isla del Caño, Manuel Antonio and Las Baulas, are closed to fishing.
