Salmon, steelhead and big inland lakes
The Columbia and Snake rivers carry chinook, coho and steelhead runs from spring through winter, plus a huge shad run and white sturgeon. The Hanford Reach is the last free-flowing stretch of the Columbia and has its biggest wild fall chinook run. On the Olympic Peninsula, the rivers around Forks are famous for wild winter steelhead.
Inland, Lake Roosevelt, Banks Lake and Potholes are walleye and bass water, Lake Chelan and Pend Oreille hold lake trout and kokanee, and the Yakima, the Deschutes and Upper Klamath Lake grow wild rainbow trout.
Rules: salmon, steelhead and sturgeon seasons change by emergency rule, many rivers have catch-and-release or selective-gear sections, the lower Deschutes is fished from the bank only, and tribal waters need tribal permits. Always check before you go.
