Salmon, halibut, lingcod and crab
Oregon and Washington are salmon country. Chinook and coho run along the coast in summer, into the bays and rivers in late summer and fall, and through the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound, where pink salmon show up in odd-numbered years. The Buoy 10 fishery at the mouth of the Columbia is one of the most famous salmon fisheries anywhere.
Black rockfish, lingcod, cabezon and greenling live on every jetty and rocky reef, and the charter boats from Brookings, Charleston, Newport, Garibaldi, Westport and Neah Bay run for bottomfish, Pacific halibut and, in warm summers, albacore tuna. Dungeness crab is in every bay.
You need an Oregon or Washington license, plus salmon, steelhead, sturgeon and halibut tags or catch record cards. Halibut and salmon seasons are short and change every year, and Oregon has five no-take marine reserves. Check ODFW and WDFW before you go, and always check the bar report before crossing a river bar.
