Blue-ribbon trout water
The Rocky Mountains hold the most famous trout rivers in America. Montana has the Madison, the Yellowstone, the Missouri below Holter Dam and the Bighorn, all with thousands of trout per mile, and Idaho has the Henry's Fork and the South Fork of the Snake with native cutthroat.
Tailwaters below big dams, like the Bighorn, the Green below Flaming Gorge, the Frying Pan and Gray Reef on the North Platte, stay cold and fishable all year. Summer brings the big hatches: salmonflies, caddis, mayflies and grasshoppers.
Rules: each state sells its own license, many rivers have special rules (artificial lures only, catch-and-release sections, seasonal closures), and bull trout must always be released. Much of the riverbank is private, so use public access sites.
