Parks & rules

Data rule: Each star is the nearest point on the Natural Earth river centerline to the town; these are general positions, not pinpoints, and each star says so. Marinas and launches come from OpenStreetMap, and the parks and reserves come from the World Database on Protected Areas. Fishery reserves closed to fishing are shown in solid red; parks where fishing follows their own rules are shown in dashed red. Every star shows its source when you tap it. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

The river tiger: golden dorado

The Paraná and Uruguay rivers are home of the golden dorado, a hard-jumping, gold-colored river fish with sharp teeth that anglers call the river tiger. The fast water below the Yacyretá and Salto Grande dams and the islands of the Alto Paraná are world famous for big ones.

The rivers also hold surubí (a big spotted catfish), pacú, boga, patí and, in the lagoons, the toothy tararira.

Rules: Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay each require a fishing license, and each Argentine province sets its own limits and closed seasons. In Corrientes, dorado caught on sport tackle must be released.
