Parks & rules

Data rule: Lake stars are the OpenStreetMap center of the named lake, and the river stars are OpenStreetMap town positions; these are general positions, not pinpoints, and each star says so. Docks and ramps come from OpenStreetMap; very few are mapped here. Every star shows its source when you tap it. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

Peacock bass country

The black-water rivers of the Orinoco basin, like the Inírida, the Atabapo and the Ventuari, are home to the biggest speckled peacock bass in the world, and Guri Reservoir in Venezuela is full of them. Payara, the "vampire fish", hits hard in the Orinoco rapids at Puerto Ayacucho and Puerto Carreño.

Down in the Amazon at Leticia, there are big catfish and protected arapaima, and high in the Andes, Lago de Tota has rainbow trout.

Rules: Colombia and Venezuela each require a sport-fishing permit, many rivers run through indigenous lands, and most peacock-bass trips are catch-and-release with a licensed outfitter. Check the travel advice before you go.
