Parks & rules

Data rule: River stars are the nearest point on the Natural Earth river centerline to the town, and lake stars are the OpenStreetMap lake or reservoir, checked to sit on the water (Rincón del Bonete is the nearest point on the Natural Earth reservoir outline). These are general positions, not pinpoints, and each star says so. Boat ramps come from OpenStreetMap, and the parks and reserves come from the World Database on Protected Areas. Fisheries reserves and Indigenous lands, closed to fishing, are solid red; parks and reserves with their own rules are dashed red. The Pilar star was moved 5 km upriver to stay clear of a closed fisheries reserve. Every star shows its source when you tap it. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

Dorado on the Paraguay River and pejerrey in the Pampas

The Paraguay River is big-river country: golden dorado, surubí catfish, pacú, armado and boga from Pilar and Asunción all the way north to Fuerte Olimpo and Bahía Negra, where the Pantanal begins.

In Argentina, the lagoons of Buenos Aires province (Chascomús, Lobos, Gómez in Junín and the Lagunas Encadenadas at Guaminí) are the home of pejerrey, the Argentine silverside, fished with long rods and light floats in the cool months, with tararira (wolf fish) in the reeds in summer. Córdoba's mountain reservoirs and the big lakes of Santiago del Estero and Salta add more pejerrey and carp, and the Andes reservoirs of Mendoza hold rainbow trout.

Rules: Paraguay requires a permit from the Ministry of Environment and closes fishing during the spawning veda, each Argentine province sells its own license with its own seasons, and Uruguay's fishing rules come from DINARA. Fisheries reserves and Indigenous lands are closed to fishing.

On the bay, in the mangroves, on the ocean or on a quiet lagoon at sunrise, the everyday struggles get left at the dock. For those few hours, it's just you, the water and peace.
