Parks & rules

Data rule: Every island, point, jetty, pier, bay, marina and boat ramp comes from OpenStreetMap, and the parks and reserves come from the World Database on Protected Areas. Parks, biological reserves, ecological stations, wildlife refuges and natural monuments (Arvoredo, Ilha do Campeche, the Ilhas dos Currais, Ilha do Mel, the Molhe Leste refuge, Lagoa do Peixe, Cabo Polonio, Isla de Flores, Islote Lobos and others) are no-fishing zones, and any hot spot inside or right next to one was taken off the map. Every star shows its source when you tap it. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

Bluefish on the jetties, corvina in the surf, sharks at San Blas

This is cool-water, shore-fishing country. In Santa Catarina the rocky islands off Florianópolis, Porto Belo and Imbituba hold groupers (garoupa), amberjack and bluefish (anchova), and the bays fill with corvina, weakfish and mullet. The long beaches of Rio Grande do Sul have fishing piers like Cidreira, and the Rio Grande jetties at the mouth of the Lagoa dos Patos are famous for bluefish, corvina and black drum.

In Uruguay and Argentina the classic catch is corvina from the beaches and points, with pescadilla, burriqueta, brótola, pejerrey and bluefish (anchoa) from the piers and the rocks of Punta del Este, Mar del Plata and Necochea. Bahía San Blas is Argentina's shark capital, where anglers catch and release bacota (bronze whaler), gatopardo (sevengill) and escalandrún (sand tiger). Many of these sharks are endangered: release them alive.

Rules: Brazil requires an amateur fishing license (Licença de Pesca Amadora); Uruguay and the Argentine provinces have their own sport fishing rules, sizes and closed seasons. Parks, biological reserves and refuges are closed to fishing. Check with the local authority before you go.
