Parks & rules

Data rule: The Royal Charlotte Bank, the offshore canyons and Ilha do Cabo Frio come from the Marine Regions (VLIZ) gazetteer; the bank and canyons are general centers of large features, not pinpoints, and each star says so. Islands, points, reefs, marinas and boat ramps come from OpenStreetMap, and the parks and reserves come from the World Database on Protected Areas. Parks, ecological stations, biological reserves and wildlife refuges (Abrolhos, Tamoios, Tupinambás, Tupiniquins, Laje de Santos, Alcatrazes and others) are no-fishing zones, and any hot spot inside or right next to one was taken off the map. Every star shows its source when you tap it. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

Blue marlin off Vitória, groupers on the islands, bluefish at Cabo Frio

Southeast Brazil has some of the best blue-water fishing in the South Atlantic. Off Vitória and Guarapari the shelf edge and its canyons come within about 30 miles of shore, and from about October to March blue and white marlin, sailfish, dorado, wahoo and yellowfin tuna hunt there. Farther north, the Royal Charlotte Bank off south Bahia is a famous offshore ground.

Closer in, the coast is lined with rocky islands: Guarapari's Três Ilhas, the islands of Búzios and Cabo Frio, Ilha Grande and Paraty, and Ilhabela, Búzios and Montão de Trigo off São Paulo. They hold groupers (garoupa, badejo), snappers, amberjack, bluefish (anchova), bonito and Spanish mackerel. Arraial do Cabo, where cold water wells up, is famous for big bluefish and bonito.

Rules: Brazil requires an amateur fishing license (Licença de Pesca Amadora), and the goliath grouper (mero) is fully protected. Many islands here are no-fishing ecological stations, parks or refuges (Abrolhos, Tamoios in Angra dos Reis, Tupinambás, Alcatrazes, Laje de Santos), so check where you are before you drop a line. Extractive reserves like Arraial do Cabo allow fishing under their rules.
