Data rule: The town bays come from OpenStreetMap; they are general centers, not pinpoints, and each star says so. Docks and launches come from OpenStreetMap, and the reserves come from the World Database on Protected Areas. The Galápagos and Hermandad marine reserves, where fishing is allowed only under their own rules, are shown in dashed red. Every star shows its source when you tap it. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

Fishing in a marine reserve

The Galápagos Islands are one of the most protected places in the ocean. The whole archipelago is inside the Galápagos Marine Reserve, and the newer Hermandad Marine Reserve stretches toward Costa Rica's Isla del Coco.

Visitors can still fish, but only on licensed "pesca vivencial" (experiential fishing) trips run by Galápagos fishermen, in the zones and seasons the national park allows. Trips target yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dorado and the local grouper called bacalao, and sport fishing for marlin out of San Cristóbal is catch-and-release.

Rules: never fish on your own, from the shore or from a tour boat that isn't licensed for fishing, and never take sea cucumbers, lobsters or sharks.
