The North Drop and South Drop

The big-game action in the Virgin Islands is on the North Drop, the edge of the shelf about 20 miles north of St. Thomas, and the South Drop south of St. Thomas and St. John. That is where blue marlin, wahoo, yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi run, with the best blue marlin fishing in summer around the full moon. St. Croix is different: deep water sits close to shore, so the canyons off Frederiksted and the north shore are a short run from the dock.
