Bluefin in the Strait, marlin in the islands and sea bass on the Atlantic
The Atlantic islands are blue-water country. Horta on Faial in the Azores is one of the most famous big-game ports in the world, with blue and white marlin, bigeye and bluefin tuna and swordfish in summer. Madeira (Funchal and Calheta) is known for giant blue marlin, and the Canary Islands, especially Puerto Rico de Gran Canaria, Los Cristianos and Puerto Calero, fish for blue marlin, tuna and wahoo most of the year.
On the mainland, the Atlantic coast from Galicia down through Portugal is sea bass country: lures and bait off the rocks and beaches at Peniche, Sagres and the Galician rias, with sea bream, meagre (corvina) and sole in the estuaries. The Basque ports of Bermeo, Getaria and Hondarribia send boats out for albacore and bluefin in the Bay of Biscay. In the Strait of Gibraltar, Tarifa and Barbate are bluefin tuna country, with amberjack on the rocks.
The Mediterranean gives dentex, amberjack, bream and grouper along the rocky coast, bluefin offshore of the Ebro Delta, and great shore fishing around Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. Inland, the Ebro at Mequinenza and Caspe is famous for giant wels catfish and carp, and Alqueva in Portugal for black bass and carp.
Rules: Spain needs a recreational fishing license from each region (Galicia, Andalusia, Catalonia, the Canaries and so on), and Portugal needs a license from the DGRM. Bluefin tuna has its own permits, tags and catch-and-release rules in both countries. The no-take reserves (solid red) are closed to all fishing, and inside the other marine reserves (dashed red) you need a permit and must follow their rules. Many of them have an inner zone where no fishing is allowed at all.
On the bay, in the mangroves or on the ocean, the everyday struggles get left at the dock. For those few hours, it's just you, the water and peace.
