Parks & rules

Data rule: Banco de Máncora (the Perú–Máncora Bank) comes from the Marine Regions (VLIZ) gazetteer; it is the general center of a large feature, not a pinpoint, and the star says so. Piers, points, islands, bays, coves and marinas come from OpenStreetMap, and the parks and reserves come from the World Database on Protected Areas. The Tumbes mangrove sanctuary is closed to fishing, and the guano islands (Lobos de Tierra, Lobos de Afuera, Guañape, Independencia and others) are a national reserve where you cannot land. Every star shows its source when you tap it. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

Black marlin off Cabo Blanco, corvina and lenguado down the Humboldt coast

Peru has two oceans in one. In the far north, off Tumbes, Máncora and Cabo Blanco, warm water from the equator meets the cold Humboldt Current and the deep water comes close to shore. That is where the Cabo Blanco Fishing Club made history in the 1950s, and where Alfred Glassell Jr. caught the 1,560 lb black marlin that is still the all-tackle world record. Black and striped marlin, sailfish, swordfish, yellowfin tuna and dorado (perico) still run there today, with snapper, grouper and cabrilla on the rocks.

From Paita south the water turns cold and green and incredibly rich. This is shore and small-boat country: corvina, lenguado (flounder), chita, cabrilla, pintadilla, pejerrey and bonito from the piers of Huanchaco, Pimentel and Ilo, the rocks of Pucusana and Callao, and the calm bays of Paracas and Pisco. The guano islands hold big cabrilla and mero.

Rules: Peru manages sport fishing through the Ministry of Production (PRODUCE) and the regional fisheries offices, and there are minimum sizes for corvina, lenguado, chita and other fish. The Tumbes mangrove sanctuary is closed to fishing, Paracas allows sport fishing only in set areas, and you cannot land on the guano islands. Check with your charter or the local harbor office (Capitanía) before you go, and release billfish.
