Data rule: The FAD buoys use the positions published by the Hawaii FAD program (University of Hawaii HIMB and DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources); only buoys listed as on station at the last report are shown, and buoys can break loose at any time. Penguin Bank and Cross Seamount come from the Marine Regions (VLIZ) gazetteer and the Alenuihaha Channel from OpenStreetMap; these are general centers of large features, not pinpoints, and each star says so. Harbors, piers, points, bays, ramps and marinas come from OpenStreetMap, and the protected areas come from the World Database on Protected Areas. No-take areas (marine life conservation districts closed to fishing, the Ahihi-Kinau reserve and the Kahoolawe Island Reserve) are shown in solid red; areas where fishing follows special rules are shown in dashed red. Every star shows its source when you tap it. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

Blue marlin, ahi and ulua in the middle of the Pacific

Hawaii's islands rise straight out of deep ocean, so blue water is only minutes from the harbor. Kona on Hawaii Island is world famous for Pacific blue marlin, and boats all over the state troll for ahi (yellowfin tuna), aku (skipjack), mahimahi and ono (wahoo), often around the state's FAD buoys. Penguin Bank, between Oahu and Molokai, is a favorite for ono and for bottomfishing the "Deep 7" snappers such as onaga and opakapaka.

From shore, Hawaii anglers chase ulua (giant trevally) and papio from the rocks at places like South Point, Kaena Point and Makapuu, and cast for oio (bonefish), moi and goatfish along the beaches and in the bays.

Rules: Hawaii does not require a fishing license for recreational saltwater fishing, but Deep 7 bottomfishing has its own registration, bag limits and closed areas, moi are closed June through August, and many fish have minimum sizes. Marine life conservation districts and reserves have their own rules. The Hawaii Division of Aquatic Resources has the details.
