Data rule: Islands, passes, reefs, banks, marinas and boat ramps come from OpenStreetMap. Protected areas come from the World Database on Protected Areas. Fishing spots are only placed on mapped named places, and never inside or next to an area closed to fishing. Boat ramps on inland lakes and rivers are left off. BigJoe does not invent coordinates.

Louisiana redfish, Venice tuna and Texas trout

The Louisiana marsh is famous for redfish and speckled trout, from the Chandeleur Islands and Venice down to Grand Isle and the Timbalier islands. Venice is also one of the closest ports to deep water in the Gulf, with yellowfin tuna, wahoo and marlin a short run offshore. Alabama's artificial reefs off Orange Beach and Dauphin Island hold red snapper, triggerfish and amberjack, and the Mississippi barrier islands have trout, redfish and cobia. In Texas, the Galveston jetties and San Luis Pass are good for bull reds and trout, Port Aransas has tarpon and kingfish near the jetties, Baffin Bay is known for big trout, and the Laguna Madre is shallow flats water for redfish and black drum. The Flower Garden and Stetson Banks far offshore are a marine sanctuary where hook-and-line fishing is allowed.

Most refuges, seashores and sanctuaries along this coast allow fishing with the state and federal rules. Red snapper, redfish and trout have seasons, slot sizes and bag limits that are different in each state, and you need a saltwater license for the state you fish in. Check the Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana or Texas rules before you go.
