Tarpon and snook, Campeche Bank grouper and Laguna Madre redfish
This is tarpon and snook country. Río Lagartos, Isla Aguada and the mangroves around Ciudad del Carmen and Campeche hold baby tarpon and snook, and the river mouths at Alvarado, Tecolutla and Tuxpan see big tarpon. Out on the wide, shallow Campeche Bank there are red grouper, snappers and amberjack, and Cayo Arcas is a famous offshore reef. The Tuxpan and Lobos reefs off northern Veracruz have snappers, groupers and kingfish, and the Laguna Madre in Tamaulipas is shallow flats water with redfish, speckled trout and flounder.
Alacranes Reef, the Veracruz Reef System, Bajos del Norte and the southern Gulf reefs are national parks. They show in red, and BigJoe does not put fishing spots in or next to them. Laguna de Términos, the Lobos-Tuxpan reefs and the Laguna Madre are protected areas where fishing is allowed with the local rules. Red grouper (mero) has a closed season each year. Check CONAPESCA rules and travel advisories before you go.
