Giant cod, halibut, Baltic pike and Atlantic salmon
Northern Norway is big-fish country: the skrei cod of Lofoten, the coalfish of Saltstraumen and the Atlantic halibut of Tromsø. Fishing camps rent boats all along the coast.
Sweden's Baltic archipelago grows some of the biggest pike in Europe in brackish water, and Denmark's Øresund is famous for winter cod. Iceland's salmon rivers and trout lakes are world-class and sold by permit.
Rules: sea fishing is free in Norway and mostly in Sweden, Denmark needs a national license, and rivers and lakes need local permits.
On the bay, in the mangroves or on the ocean, the everyday struggles get left at the dock. For those few hours, it's just you, the water and peace.
