Rocky Mediterranean coast from Cap Bon to Tobruk
The North African coast of the Mediterranean has deep rocky ground close to shore in Algeria and northern Tunisia, with dentex, grouper and amberjack, and wide shallow banks in the Gulf of Gabès around Sfax, Kerkennah and Djerba. Sea bream and sea bass come from the harbors and beaches, and bonito, little tunny, swordfish and bluefin tuna pass offshore.
Rules: bluefin tuna is quota-managed under ICCAT, marine parks and lagoons have their own limits, and each country sets its own licences. Check current travel advice before planning a trip, especially for Libya.
On the bay, in the mangroves or on the ocean, the everyday struggles get left at the dock. For those few hours, it's just you, the water and peace.

- Tunisia, Algeria & Libya. Mapped features come from public datasets and can be incomplete or out of date: a missing reef, ramp or wreck does not mean it is not there.

- World Database on Protected Areas (UNEP-WCMC & IUCN), Protected Planet — retrieved November 6, 2026 (license: Protected Planet terms)

- 33 hot spots, each with its own source (tap any star to see it): every one is an OpenStreetMap/Nominatim named place (general position, not a pinpoint) cross-checked against GeoNames within 5 km.
- Protected areas
- 20 protected areas from the official list above: no-take areas in solid red, others in dashed red. Each is run by its own national agency; check the rules with them before you fish.
