Red Sea reefs and the great Nile
Sudan and Eritrea share some of the least-fished reefs in the Red Sea, with grouper, giant trevally, Spanish mackerel and dogtooth tuna around Port Sudan, Sanganeb and the Dahlak Islands. Inland, the Nile runs through Sudan and South Sudan, with giant Nile perch, tigerfish and big catfish from Lake Nubia all the way to Juba.
Before you go: Sudan has been in a civil war since 2023, and Khartoum and many areas are dangerous or cut off. South Sudan has ongoing conflict, and Eritrea requires travel permits outside Asmara and Massawa. Check the current security situation, go only with trusted local guides, and get any fishing or park permits first. Sanganeb, Dungonab Bay and the Dahlak Islands are protected.
On the bay, in the mangroves or on the ocean, the everyday struggles get left at the dock. For those few hours, it's just you, the water and peace.
